Preston's Pond
A Little Piece Of Heaven
 |
 |
Cradled in the outreached arms of the Arbuckle Mountains syncline is one man's little piece of heaven...and he is willing to share it with others. Welcome to Preston's Pond.
John Preston is not your likely everyday Joe for sure. I say that because I can remember a time in my fishing life that it took nothing to get a landowner to let me go a-fishing on their property. Today, that luxury is very rare. John has a not so big, but sure beautiful, pond that is nestled on the north side of the Arbuckle Mountains near Davis, Oklahoma. And, John stocks his pond with Rainbow Trout each cold weather season. Recently Tanner my grandson who happens to be my best buddy in the world, and I were able to experience the trout of Preston's Pond.
Tanner was on reprieve from the rigors of higher education due to Christmas break and although it was only a couple days after Christmas the weather seemed more like April. So, we decide to go fly fishing!

Again, Preston's Pond is not a large body of water but it appears quite deep overall. Anglers might be best served to pack a flotation device such as a float tube or kick-boat for their visit to Preston's. However, the pond can be fished quite well from the edges. John has a wooden dock that can be utilized and he has went to the trouble of making rock piers which allow for plenty of casting room.
Tanner and I used basic weight forwarded floating line but a fly fisher might just want to pack an extra reel lined up with sink tip.
We saw trout rising quite frequently well past our casting distance so thus the heads up for that flotation device we spoke of earlier.
The only fly we used on our outing was the bugger. In our case we used size 10 buggers, dark olive bodied, black tail with black hackle. One had a conehead, the other a beadhead. They worked great! Other flies that produce quite well, as we are told, are the Gold Ribbed Hare's Ear and soft hackles.
